Bernice Cox Obituary
She was born on July 16, 1922, in East Hartford, daughter of the late Martin and Anna (Heim) Mattesen. Bernice attended local schools, was a graduate of Manchester High School, Class of 1940, and had resided in Manchester for over 80 years. Prior to her retirement in 1985, Bernice was employed for over 25 years with UTC in the research center as a buyer. Bernice was a longtime member of Order of Eastern Star 53, the former Sunset Rebekah Lodge in Manchester, and the UTC Retirees Club. She was an avid golfer and played in many leagues at Manchester Country Club over the years. Bernice was an avid fan of UConn girls basketball and the New York Yankees.
She is survived by her son, Ernest A. Cox Jr. of North Hollywood, Calif.; her daughter, Shirley C. McBride of Manchester; three loving grandchildren, Kathryn Tarkowski, and her husband, Mark, of Westernville, N.Y., Robynne Mulligan and Greg Cole Jr. of Manchester and Matthew McBride and Jaimie LaChapelle of East Windsor; three great-grandchildren, Cianan and Saige Mulligan and Emma Lyn Cole. Bernice also leaves her two nieces, Sandra Haun, and her husband, Robert, of Somers and Janet Nielsen and Joe Whetstone of Valrico, Fla., and their families. In addition to her parents, Bernice was predeceased by her two sisters and their husbands, Olive and Charles Hawley and Gladys and Thomas Nielsen.
Bernice's family would like to extend a special thank you to Emeritus/Buckingham Assisted Living in Glastonbury and the staff of Vitas Hospice Services for their kind and compassionate care.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, Sept. 30, at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester, from 10:30 a.m. until noon. An Order of Eastern Star service will begin at 11:45 a.m. followed by the funeral service at noon at the funeral home. Burial will be in East Cemetery, Manchester.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Center Congregational Church Memorial Fund, 11 Center St., Manchester, CT 06040; or to the Alzheimer's Association, 2075 Silas Deane Highway, Suite 100, Rocky Hill, CT 06067.
