John Sommers Obituary

John G. Sommers Sr., beloved and devoted husband of Elizabeth (Konney) Sommers of Manchester, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at home with his family by his bedside.

Born in Hartford on March 2, 1955, son of Betina M. (Greaves) Sommers of South Windsor and the late Joseph F. Sommers. John had lived in Manchester for the past 33 years, received his primary education from Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Mass., and his undergraduate degree from Nichols College in Dudley, Mass. Mr. Sommers was the chairman and CEO of Allied Printing Services in Manchester and served his family's business for 35 years. During these many years, John successfully led his business with high moral standards, a deep compassion for his "Allied family," and a true passion for printing. He was a dedicated philanthropist throughout his life dedicating his time and resources to those less fortunate than him. John considered his employees to be part of his family. Above all, family came first. He enjoyed the holidays, and any/all family gatherings that sometimes included traveling to Cape Cod, Vermont, and Bermuda. Sports were a big part of his life, He played softball and hockey, coached Little League and youth hockey, and was a dedicated Boston Red Sox and New York Giants fan.

In addition to his mother, Betina, and his adored wife, Liz, he leaves three children, John G. Sommers Jr., and his fiancée, Talia J. Wheeler, of Manchester, Rachel E. Sommers of Boston, and her boyfriend, Phip Martignetti, and Matthew G. Sommers of Manchester; a sister, Heather E. Perry, and her husband, John, of Dunedin, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Brenda B. Sommers of South Windsor; a niece and nephew, Bettina and Nathan Sommers; dear friends and business associates. He was predeceased by his brother, Gerald F. Sommers. John was an animal lover and he leaves his canine companions, Kelly and Sake, two cats, Scotch and Whiskey, and his horse, Biz.

His family will receive friends Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Allied Printing Services Charitable Foundation, One Allied Way, Manchester, CT 06042 in honor of John to be equally distributed to his many favorite charities.

To the Sommers Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you continue life's journey without John, your husband, your father.
Rachel, I feel especially sad for you. I lost my father when I was 25 years old. I know how tough it is for a woman to lose her father ar such a young age, before his time. There is a special bond between a father and daughter. You will always miss him but he will live on through the memories of him that you will talk about over the years to come. I hope you and your family can find strength in remembering him, sharing stories and being together during these sorrowful times.

John was a civic minded and generous donor to Manchester Community College and because of his support many students received scholarship funds to attend college. His in-kind donations played a significant role in our ability to support more students. His gifts and kindness will never be forgotten and will part of his legacy.

Dear Liz, John, Rachel, Matthew and family.
John was a wonderful neighbor that we met on Patriot Lane in Manchester. John was wonderful to my daughters as they grew up. When John and Liz started their family my daughters had the privilege of babysitting for their children. John was a father figure to both my daughters and we were honored to have John and Liz attend one of our daughter's weddings. He will be missed by everyone in our family, he was a man of great compassion and will never be forgotten. You are all in my thoughts.

Dear Liz, John Jr., Rachel, Matthew, Heather and Bette: As your hearts break and the tears continue to flow, I hope that you can all find peace in knowing that John was loved by so many. I first met John as an employee of Allied printing back in 1988 and remember how wonderful he was then. He expected the most from his employees and they respected him for that. I had the true pleasure of meeting him once again on the ice - from In-House through the Bantam years. He was an amazingly dedicated man, full of knowledge and experience who volunteered his time wholeheartedly and always with a smile. He will be dearly missed.
Sincerely, Annie Dondero
