Leon Chorches Obituary

Leon J. Chorches, 94, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and formerly of Tolland, beloved husband for 66 years to Phyllis (Goldsmith) Chorches, died Friday, July 26, 2013, in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Born in Hartford, the son of the late Jacob and Molly (Waldorf) Chorches, he lived most of his life in Tolland and Vernon before moving to North Carolina. Leon was raised on a farm and learned to be resourceful and fix anything. Gardening gave him great pleasure, and he got great joy from sharing these skills with his family and friends. Leon graduated with high honors from Rockville High School and was first in his graduating class from the University of Connecticut. He was drafted into the U.S. Army as a private on Nov. 17, 1941, and shipped out to the Pacific Theater in January 1942. He served 44 months and was discharged as a captain with a wealth of stories to share. After serving as a marketing specialist for the Connecticut Department of Agriculture, Leon worked many years for the Cobb Corp. In 1960, he became a Realtor and co-founded the successful Lipman-Chorches Real Estate and Insurance Agency. January 1979 found Leon following an opportunity to become executive vice president of Tolland Bank, a position he was proud to hold until his retirement in December 1984.

In addition to his wife, Leon is survived by two daughters, Faith C. Kamins, and her husband, Stephen, and Joan C. Rutledge, and her husband, Dean; three grandchildren, Brian Kamins, and his wife, Reena, Adam Rutledge, and his wife, Anne Marsh, and Sara Shattuck, and her husband, Alex. He was delighted by his great-granddaughters, Natalie and Hannah Kamins.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon. Burial will follow in B'nai Israel Cemetery, South Windsor.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Leon's memory may be made to the Hole in the Wall Gang Fund, 555 Long Wharf Drive, Dept. W, New Haven, CT 06511.

To Phyllis and Family, I grew up across the street from Phyllis's family. Betty Goldsmith and my mother were dear friends. When I was 7, Phyllis became engaged and she brought the young man to our flat to meet us. He was handsome, in a belted tan trenchcoat - I was smitten, but he was taken. I am grateful for all the years the two of you had together and the blessing of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dwell on the good memories, and may they be for a blessing.
