Susan Spadjinske Obituary

On Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, Susan M. Spadjinske, 45, passed away at Massachusetts General Hospital after a valiant 21-month battle with cancer.

She grew up in Southington and quickly became a lover of all things musical. She learned to play several instruments and was active in Southington High School marching and concert bands. She went on to graduate from Lebanon Valley College of Annville, Pa., with a degree in music education, and she received her master's from Central Connecticut State University. Susan spent the last 23 years as a music and choral teacher at Vernon Center Middle School. In her spare time Sue loved dance, gardening, and going to see Broadway shows. She cherished her cats Gizzie, Louis, and Fluffy. She enjoyed putting food out for the birds and deer each winter. She also looked forward to spending time at Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire each year. Sue treasured spending time with her nieces and nephews, who affectionately referred to her as "Auntie Susie." She always had a smile on her face and was truly a joy to be around. She will be dearly missed.

Sue is survived by her longtime boyfriend, Rob Siragusa, the love of her life. She also leaves her parents, Gerry and Lucille Spadjinske; her sister Mary Lou Geremia and brother-in-law, Sal; her brother Jeff and sister-in-law, Annette; her nieces and nephews, whom she absolutely adored, Victoria and Joshua Geremia, Alaina and Jarrod Spadjinske; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Her family would like to thank Dr. Li and her staff, especially Sheila Citrone and Brian at Manchester Memorial, the staff at Mass. General, especially Dr. Shaw and Jennifer Logan NP, and Yale-New Haven Hospital, who lovingly cared for Sue of these past several months.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington, to St. Aloysius Church at 10 a.m. for a Mass. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Meriden.

Calling hours are today, Dec. 9, from 4 to 7 p.m.

As the holiday approaches, it reminds me of Sue leading the 8th grade chorus caroling through the halls of VCMS. Music brings joy and soothes and heals. A beautiful angel has joined the heavenly chorus, albeit, way too soon.

A great woman, more a friend than my teacher. So many great, simple memories of staying late after chorus chatting, doing colorguard, her helping me find a song to sing for the solo concert. I really appreciate how much she invested in me (and all her students) and how she was such an encouragement. My deepest condolences to her family.

My heart is so saddened to hear of the loss of Miss Spadjinske. Miss S. was a teacher who stood out among the rest. I was always a shy person, and she gave me the confidence to sing by myself in front of a crowded room time and time again and I will never forget her because of that.

To her loved ones, I hope that you will be comforted knowing that her passion for music and her way of teaching always with a smile will always be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Words can't express how saddened we were to hear about Sue's passing. She was a wonderful educator, motivator and mentor to both of my girls through the chorus and flute choir at VCMS. Her passion for music will live on through all of the children who had the honor of being taught by her.

Rob, Gerry and Lucille and family- Sue's legacy lives on in those she taught. Their love of music will continue thru their lives and those they touch, what a great way to honor a wonderful teacher. It was my honor to call her a friend. Hold tight to all those fond memories, may they bring you comfort. I am truly sorry for your tremendous loss.

Her voice was the most majestic thing you can ever hear and her smile just lit up the room. She helped me get through my first solo at VCMS and told me that she was so proud of me. I'm sorry if you never got a chance to meet her because I guess you have never met a real angel before. Cancer might have even taken her life, but it will never steal her rock and roll. You will be missed dearly. I love you.
