Bernard J. "Bernie" Garvey, 84, of Enfield, loving husband of the late Marlene M. (Shearer) Garvey, passed away peacefully on Dec. 27, 2012, the 35th anniversary of the death of his daughter Sally Ann in the Providence College Dormitory fire.

Bernie was born in Easthampton, Mass., the son of the late Michael and Mary (Moran) Garvey. He served in the U.S. Navy and graduated from Westfield State College and went on to teach math and science in the Windsor Locks school system for more than 35 years. Bernie also served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Philip Church. Bernie was a bright light wherever he made his presence, befriended and loved by many for his quick Irish wit and sense of humor. Bernie's family would like to extend their appreciation to the entire staff of The Suffield House and the Hartford Hospital Bliss 10 East Cardio Unit for their tireless efforts and extraordinary care, particularly Brian, Christine, and Adam.

Bernie will be dearly missed by his son, Michael Garvey; two daughters, Susan Garvey and Kathleen Bridges and her husband, Sam; four grandchildren, SallyAnn, Sean, Ryan, and Lizzie, whom he adored; four sisters-in-law, Ernestine Favaro of Northhampton, Shirley Ciampi of Springfield, Sylvia Gallagher of Easthampton, and Myrtle Garvey of Southhampton; two brothers-in-law, Charles Shearer of Agawam and Edward Shearer of Venice, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. Bernie was predeceased by his daughter Sally Ann Garvey; two sisters, Rosemary and Eileen; four brothers, Jimmy, Jackie, Bill, and Bobby.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Catherine Church in the Broad Brook section of East Windsor on Monday, Dec. 31, at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the Recreation Department Fund at Suffield House, 1 Canal Road, Suffield, CT 06078.
