Beverly June (Mortland) Schaeffer, 86, a resident of New Fairfield and former 42-year resident of Somers, died early Thursday morning, May 2, 2013, at Danbury Hospital surrounded by her loving family at her side.

She was born and educated in Springfield, Mass., a daughter of the late George and Cleda (Beall) Mortland. Beverly earned her bachelor of arts degree from Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee, Mass. She began her career as an elementary teacher with the Enfield School System from which she retired in the early 1980's. Always artistic, upon retiring from teaching she studied at the Art Students League in New York. She and her husband built an art studio at their home in Somers where she continued her passion of painting for many years.
Beverly was the beloved wife of the late John A. Schaeffer who died on Nov, 13, 2010, and leaves three children, Anne K. Schaeffer of New Fairfield, Martha J. Schaeffer Feinstein and her husband, Paul D. of Yonkers, N.Y., and John A. Schaeffer, Jr. and his wife, Sharon of Palmer, Mass.; a sister, Joyce Dalton of Florida; as well as ten grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; and two nephews and a niece. She was predeceased by her son, Thomas G. Schaeffer.
Her funeral will be held on Monday, May 6, at noon at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield, with burial to follow at New West Cemetery in Somers.
