Catherine Berkowitz Obituary

Catherine (Carter) Berkowitz, 51, of South Windsor, beloved wife and companion of Jerome "Jerry" Berkowitz for over 20 years, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 20, 2010, surrounded by her family at her home.

Born in Hartford on Oct. 29, 1958, daughter of Frances (Varhue) Cecil of Broad Brook and the late Roland Carter, she had lived in East Windsor and Broad Brook before moving to South Windsor 15 years ago. Catherine worked with her husband, Jerry, at his company, Good Sports Inc., in South Windsor for many years. She also loved eBay auctions and spent many hours looking, listing, and bidding on various items. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, driving her yellow Volkswagen Beetle, and taking trips with her husband on their Harley Davidson motorcycle. Most of all, she will be remembered as a very bright and positive person who loved to be with her family and friends.

Besides her husband and her mother, she leaves two daughters, Danielle M. Perron of Orlando, Fla., and Jadien "Heather" Smith of Manchester; a brother, Edward Carter, and his wife, Terry, of Clayton, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Carter of Southington and Lesa Walter, and her husband, Rudy, of Enfield; two grandchildren whom she cherished and who will miss their "Mema" greatly, Mickayla Smith and Ian Foster; three nephews, Rudy Walter and Christopher and David Carter; and two nieces, Stephanie and Jennifer Carter. She was predeceased by a brother, Allan Carter, and her stepfather, Paul Cecil.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 24, 10 a.m. at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor. Burial will follow in St. Catherine Cemetery, Broad Brook.

Her family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 23, 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family has requested that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 825 Brook St., Rocky Hill, CT 06067-3405, or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Mark and I are so, so sorry to hear of Cathy's passing. Some of my earliest memories as a little girl are of Cathy baby sitting for us and working with her in the doughnut stand. She always had a big smile and a positive attitude. Our deepest condolences to you all.

Always ready to smile
Always ready to laugh
You will stay within my heart
While I travel down life's path

Flying pigs and angels
And other memories too
All these things I'll think of
Each time I think of you

God saw you very tired
Better health not to be
So he sent down an angel that said
"Cathy - come with me"

You have left the pain behind
And all your loved ones too
But now you soar with the angels
It is what you were meant to do...

I love you and will miss you..
