Charles R. "Charlie" Smith 81, of Manchester, beloved husband of Mary P. Jarvis-Smith of Manchester, died peacefully, Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at an area convalescent home.
He was born June 6, 1931, in Lowell, Mass., son of the late Leicester and Ruth (Conant) Smith. He was a 1949 graduate of Manchester High School and later attended Worcester Poly Tech and Hillyer College. Charlie was a member of Friendship-Tuscan Lodge No. 145 A.F.&A.M. and the Sphinx Shriners. He worked at Chapin Box, Royal Typewriter, Hamilton Standard, and owned Tobacco Valley Insurance Agency. He retired in 2008 as a Transportation Security Administration agent with airport security at Bradley International Airport.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by six sons, Charles R. Smith Jr., and his wife, Sue, of Southington, George L. Smith, and his wife, Melissa, of Flower Mound, Texas, Duane E. Smith, and his wife, Diana, of East Windsor, William R. Jarvis, and his wife, Laura, of Virginia Beach, Va., Sean E. Jarvis of Manchester, James M. Jarvis, and his wife, Jessica, of Glastonbury; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and hosts of others who he touched throughout his life.
The family would like to express a special thanks to the nurses and staff at Manchester Manor and Masonicare for their compassionate and loving care.
Services will begin Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester, at 7:30 p.m. with a Masonic service followed by the funeral service. Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 p.m. until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospital, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104-2396; or to Shriner's Children's Hospital Burn Unit, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
