Craig Leo Smith, 67, of East Hartford, died peacefully at his home on Monday, April 1, 2013. He was on home hospice care.

Craig was the youngest of four children and the son of Herman C. and Irene M. Smith. He was born in Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.H., on Oct. 30, 1945. The family moved to Connecticut in the late '50s. Craig graduated from Manchester High School, Class of 1965. Craig served in the U.S. Air Force for four years and overseas in Vietnam. He lived in East Hartford most of his life and was retired from Coca-Cola in 2009. He also worked for Pratt & Whitney, AT&T, and Western electric. Craig was known by friends for his animal kindness and for rescuing feral, abandoned, and stray cats, and aiding in their receiving shots, neutering or spaying, and adoption. He leaves his cat Snuffy to his sister.
Craig is survived by sister, Irene S. Bates; brothers, Raymond C. Smith and David L. Smith (deceased Oct. 20, 1990); uncles, the Rev. Bertram O. Smith of Waterville, Maine, and the Rev. Charles L. and wife, June Smith, of Providence, R.I.; nephews, Joseph M. Bates and wife, Shirley Mae Bates, of Arlington, Texas; great-nephew Jason David Bates of Dallas, Texas; great-niece Mattiejene Stephens of Springtown, Texas, wife of Jimmy stephens; great-grandnieces, Kayla, Tara, and Leah Stephens.
A celebration of life memorial will be held at the French Social Circle Club, 373 Main St., East Hartford, on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at 7 p.m. Craig's uncle, the Rev. Charles L. Smith, will officiate and a military honor guard will present colors. Comments from guests will be accepted and a buffet will follow.
