On Sept. 9, 2018, our loving mother, Dorothy Alice (Fisck) Shewokis, 86 years young, entered into eternal rest after a courageous battle against Alzheimer's disease.

Dorothy was a longtime resident of East Hartford, moving to Somers in 2011 to be closer to her family.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Charles; and her parents, the late Mary and Gregory Fisck. Dorothy was a loving, caring yet firm mother to her three children, John Shewokis of Somers, James and Deanise Shewokis (who Mom always considered the daughter she always wanted) of Somers, and Ken in South Carolina. Besides her three children, Dorothy leaves behind two beautiful grandchildren, Kristopher Shewokis and his wife, Jamie, of Manchester, and her granddaughter, Concetta Shewokis, daughter of James and Deanise of Somers; along with her great-granddaughter, Jordon, daughter of Kristopher and Jamie Shewokis. She also leaves behind her brother, Raymond Fisck of East Hartford.

Dorothy graduated from East Hartford High School class of 1951. Never afraid of hard work or a challenge, Dorothy started picking tobacco in the fields of Manchester and East Hartford as a teenager and then moved on to the Travelers Insurance Co., J.M. Fields stores, and finally retired from the AARP medical pharmacy in East Hartford. Dorothy loved to work in different retail establishments. Prior to her moving to Somers, Dorothy could often be seen cutting her grass, trimming hedges, and shoveling snow at her home on Forbes Street in East Hartford well into her mid-70s. Dorothy also loved to bake and spend time with her "other children," her loving cats who Dorothy took in as strays and provided with a loving home.

Dorothy will be missed dearly. God finally took her home to the gates of heaven and has rid her tired body of much pain she endured in the last few years.

A funeral service will be held at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor, Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in East Hartford at Hillside Cemetery next to her beloved husband Charles along with her parents and many friends who went home before her. Her family will receive friends Wednesday prior to the service from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

The Shewokis family would like to give a heartfelt thanks to the Donor family of Enfield, the Loalbo family of Coventry, Ken and Charlie of Sturbridge, Massachusetts, and countless others who helped and guided our family through this difficult trying time. The family would also like to thank all the caretakers who took care and watched over Dorothy as if she was their mother, especially Lisa, along with the caring staff at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford Springs. We also would like to thank the great EMT/firefighters of Somers who time after time answered the call to help and assist Dorothy during her declining days here on earth.

Donations in memory of Dorothy can be made to the Somers Fire Department, 400 Main St., Somers, CT 06071.
