Elaine M. Kratochvil, 75, of Union, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2018.

She was born in Stafford Springs, daughter of the late George Jr. and Irene B. (Yoskovich) Hopko. Elaine's career started in the insurance industry, but her love for cooking led her to work in the Stafford schools cafeterias and for local restaurants as a cook and baker. She was always busy in the kitchen, and was affectionately known by her family as the "Baking Queen." Her passion was displayed one Thanksgiving week when she baked over 200 pies to be sold at a local restaurant. As well as every Christmas she would bake around 10,000 cookies of 18 different varieties, colors, and flavors to give to family and friends.

Her love for family and the kitchen was apparent with the way she would cook her ethnic Sunday dinners for her family while teaching and passing on those secret recipes and traditions to her children and grandchildren. Her teachings went beyond the kitchen with the crocheting and knitting of hundreds of beautiful items including blankets, quilts, and sweaters that eventually led to her being the founder of the first Girls Club in Union where sewing, knitting, crocheting, cooking, and more were taught. She stayed busy helping other children with after school care. She was also a member of the Union Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, where she served as treasurer for several years.

Elaine is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, Joseph Kratochvil; four children, Barbara Kratochvil and her partner, James Barcomb, John Kratochvil and his partner, Cheryl Scroggins, Karen Theis, and Paul Kratochvil and his partner, Cheryl Mohrlein; seven grandchildren, Amber, Laura Beth, Kelsey, Melissa, Jake, Jessica, and Charlie; four siblings, Patricia Chaves and her husband, Frank, Joan Audette, Steve Hopko, and David Hopko; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Monday, July 16, at noon at the Union Center Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Union.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Union Volunteer Fire Department, 1049 Buckley Highway, Union, CT 06076.
