Emily E. (Canfield) Dowling, 91, of South Windsor, wife of the late James Dowling, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at Hartford Hospital.

Born in Wethersfield, the daughter of the late Thomas and Bertha (Morgan) Canfield, she grew up and lived in Wethersfield before moving to South Windsor over 54 years ago. She was a graduate of Hartford High School. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Emily loved gardening, flowers, and animals. She was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church in South Windsor.

She is survived by her beloved children, James Dowling, and his companion, Penny Deutz, of East Hartford, Laura Dowling, and her companion, Paul Kelly, of Vernon, and Thomas Dowling, and his wife, Joan, of South Windsor; five grandchildren, Rachel, Andrew, Jeffrey, Brian, and Elizabeth; a brother, George Canfield of South Windsor; a sister, Bertha DeNunzio, and her husband, Danny, of East Hartford; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Elaine Canfield, and many nieces and nephews. Emily was also predeceased by two brothers, Thomas and Charlie Canfield, and a sister, Lois Tedone.

Her family will receive friends for calling hours on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor. Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 673 Ellington Road, South Windsor. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill.

Memorial donations in Emily's memory may be made to the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT 06111.
