Gene D. Coutant, 72, of Tolland, beloved husband of Sandra (Keegan) Coutant, passed away Sunday, April 21, 2013.

He was born April 9, 1941, in Catskill, N.Y., the son of the late Melvin and Evelyn (Townsend) Coutant. In Gene's early years, he owned a car dealership. He later fulfilled his love of driving, working for FedEx. In his retirement, he and his wife loved driving their motorhome to Texas, where they spent their winters. There, Gene was a volunteer teacher, teaching English to Mexican children. He was an Air Force veteran of Vietnam and a Boy Scout leader. Gene was an avid golfer, Boston Red Sox fan, and UConn basketball fan.
Besides his wife of 52 years, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Kelly and Greg Smayda of Tolland, Scott and Susan Coutant of Marlborough, Michael Coutant of Tolland, and Chris and Kelly Coutant of Tolland. He also leaves five grandchildren, Devyn, Demoris, and Brodey Coutant of Marlborough and Nicholas and Taylor Coutant of Tolland. Gene is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Eleanor Coutant of Florida; four nephews; and his beloved cat, PJ.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 27, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Merrow Road (Route 195), Tolland. Burial will follow in South Cemetery, Tolland. Calling hours will be held Friday, April 26, 2013, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Town of Vernon/Dog/Cat Pound, 100 Windsorville Road, Vernon CT 06066.
