Henry J. Mercik Jr., 79, a resident of Suffield for the past four years and former longtime resident of Enfield, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at Suffield by the River, surrounded by his loving family.

Henry was born and educated in Enfield, a son of the late Henry J. Mercik Sr. and Helen V. (Corbett) Mercik, and was a graduate of Enfield High School, Class of 1951. He continued his education receiving his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Hartford as well as his master's in electrical and mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Henry was a veteran of the Korean War serving as a sergeant and radio mechanic with the United States Marine Corps until his honorable discharge from active service. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal. He was a gifted high school athlete who was a member of the 1948 Enfield High School state championship football team. Henry was employed for 31 years as a mechanical engineer at Hamilton Standard until his retirement in 1993. He was an avid sportsman and sports enthusiast who enjoyed playing golf with family, friends, and colleagues for most of his life. In his younger years, Henry coached both the Enfield youth football and hockey teams. He was a longtime communicant and usher at Holy Family Church and former member of the Enfield Knights of Columbus.

He was the devoted husband of the late Agnes (Kula) Mercik, and leaves two loving sons, Kenneth R. Mercik of Enfield and David P. Mercik, and his wife, Maryellen, of Suffield; a brother, Robert T. Mercik, and his wife, Joyce, of Suffield and formerly of Enfield; a sister-in-law, Iris Mercik of Penfield, N.Y.; and two grandchildren, Lauren H. and Kyle D. Mercik, both of Suffield. He was predeceased by his brother, James E. Mercik.

His funeral will be held on Monday, March 4, at 9 a.m. from Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church, 23 Simon Road, with burial and military honors to conclude at St. Patrick's King Street Cemetery, all in Enfield.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.
