Howard Muir Whaples, 76, of Crystal River, Fla., formerly of Manchester, beloved husband of 57 years to Barbara (Pyka) Whaples, passed away on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at home.

Howard was born on Dec. 8, 1936, in Hartford, son of the late Clayton A. and Mildred (Muir) Whaples. He had been a resident of Manchester for many years before moving to Florida in 1990. Prior to his retirement, Howard was employed as a sales associate for the former Acme Auto in Manchester. He enjoyed spending time with his family and he was an avid Tony Stewart NASCAR fan.
In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by his son, Richard Garner of Port Richey, Fla.; his loving and cherished aunt, Frances Pyka of Manchester; a brother-in-law, Walter Pyka of West Olive, Mich.; his two sisters-in-law, Loretta Soule, and her husband, Francis, of Springfield, and Diane Lombardi, and her husband, John, of Manchester, and all of their families.
A calling hour will be held on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, from 10 to 11 a.m. with a prayer service to begin at 11 a.m. at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester. Burial will follow in Buckland Cemetery, Manchester.
