Joan C. Belval, 76, of Manchester, passed away on April 20, 2013, of complications after a nearly year-long battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Verna; and brothers, Arthur G., Ronald, and Allen.

She was born on Nov. 1, 1936, in Grand Isle, Maine, the daughter of Arthur P. and Mattie B. Cyr. Following graduation from Mount Saint James in West Hartford in 1954, she worked for Traveler's Insurance until she married her husband, Leo P. Belval Sr., upon his discharge from the United States Navy in 1958. Joan was loved and respected by family and friends for her warmth and compassion, deep devotion to her family, her selflessness and deep religious beliefs. She was a homemaker and gifted seamstress, giving gifts of handmade quilts for children in need through various organizations in the Hartford/ Manchester area. Joan always made sure everyone else was taken care of before herself.

She is survived by her husband, Leo P. Belval Sr.; and her children, Audrey Houghtaling of West Leyden, N.Y., Michelle King, and her husband, Greg, of Manchester, Leo Belval Jr., and his wife, Lisa, of Ivoryton, Jennifer Belval of Ivoryton, Michael Belval, and his wife, Christine, of Ivoryton, Thomas Belval, and his wife, Shawn, of Westbrook, Stephen Belval, and his wife, Diane, of Ivoryton, and Jason Belval, and his wife, Amy, of Denver, N.C.; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; her sister, Cecile Belval of Middletown; and brother, Leo Cyr, and his wife, Joyce, of Manchester.

A funeral Mass celebrating Joan's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 26, 2013, at the Church of the Assumption, 29 S. Adams St., Manchester.
