John A. Weerden Jr., 79, of South Windsor, formerly of Manchester for 70 years, beloved husband of the late Diana (Kiecolt) Weerden and son of the late John and Rena (Barrett) Weerden, passed away Sept. 5, 2013, at home surrounded by his family after battling prostate cancer for several years.

John graduated from Manchester High School. He worked at Pratt and Whitney, East Hartford until his retirement and at Sears after retirement. He was a coach for many years within the Manchester Little League Association where his team won the town championship one year. He was an avid Red Sox, NY Giants, and UConn basketball fan.

He leaves his daughters Jo-Ann Morano, Julie Huhtala, and Jan Shorts and her husband, Todd; his son John Weerden and his wife, Aimee; his grandchildren Brian and Tricia Morano, Tim, Chris, and Stephanie Huhtala, Jenna, Patrick and Tyler Weerden, and Stephen and Jeff Shorts. He also leaves seven great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8 at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St. Manchester.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at St. Bartholomew Church, 45 Ludlow Road, Manchester. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Manchester.

In lieu of flowers, John may be remembered with a memorial donation to Masonicare Home Health & Hospice, c/o The Masonic Charity Foundation of CT, PO Box 70, Wallingford, CT 06492.
