He joined the Army National Guard until 1972 with an honorable discharge and then joined Westover Airforce Base and went to Desert Storm in 1990. He put in 25 years with the service and retired from there. He opened up Shlatz Package Store on Taylor Road in Enfield and stayed until his health deteriorated.

John loved helicopters, especially Huey's and flying small planes. He was an avid hunter for deer and turkeys on his property. A NASCAR fan, he enjoyed Beach Boys and '50s and '60s music, westerns, and dogs, especially his dog "Belle," who was so attached to him.
