Marlene R. Latimer, 81, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at Duke Medical Center. She split her time between Caswell Beach, N.C., and Brooksville, Fla.

Marlene was born in Torrington on Feb. 24, 1932. Marlene leaves behind her husband and best friend, Howard, with whom she celebrated 60 years of marriage in August. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Henrietta (John) Maffucci; and brother, Alan (Charla) Rossi; two children, Laurie (Gary) Cuddy and son, Howard (Marianne ) Latimer; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Marlene was the first person in her family to graduate from college. She attended the University Of Connecticut in early childhood education 1953, earning a Bachelor of Arts and then received her master's degree, summa cum laude, from Central Connecticut State College. Mrs. Latimer was named Connecticut Teacher of the Year during her 25-year public school teaching at the Vernon school system in Connecticut.

Marlene was a fabulous cook, loved to play golf and most of all enjoyed her family and friends beyond all else. As a devout Lutheran, Marlene practiced her faith every day. She is with her Lord and Savior. Marlene is sadly missed, but the memories she made will be with us forever

A memorial service was held at the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Southport, N.C., for family and friends.
