Mary J. Halak, 90, of West Hartford, passed away Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at St. Mary Home, West Hartford.

Born July 31, 1922, in Enfield, daughter of the late Walter and Jennie (Kasulinious) Halak, she lived in Hartford most of her life before moving to West Hartford in 1988. Mary graduated Enfield High School Class of 1940, completed a bachelor's degree at the University of Hartford and did postgraduate work at St. Joseph College and Providence College. Mary served with the U.S. Navy during World War II as a yeoman first class. She was employed as a teacher for St. Gabriel's School, Windsor, by the Aetna, and the Hartford Police Department before retiring. A woman of deep religious devotion, she was associated with numerous religiousgroups , among them the Felician Sisters, the Dominican Sisters, the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, the Carmelite Sisters, and the Sisters of Mercy. She was a member of the Blue Army Worldwide Apostolate of Fatima for over 50 years.
She is survived by two nieces, Barbara Smigiel and Janet LePage; and a nephew, Walter Hallack; as well as several grandnephews and nieces. She was predeceased by two sisters, Florence Smigiel and Ann Littlefield, and a brother, Raymond Hallack.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Home Chapel, 2021 Albany Ave., West Hartford. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery, Enfield.
