Richard Avery West, 86, of Tolland, beloved husband of Lois B. (Buchanan) West, passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born July 2, 1926 in Hartford, he was a son to the late Ivan and Helen (Sweeney) West. He was a veteran of World War II, serving his country proudly with the U.S. Army. During the war he had driven tanks under the direction of General Patton. Richard enjoyed puzzles, playing horseshoes at family picnics, and gardening, especially his rose gardens. He was a member of the United Congregational Church of Tolland, VFW, and the Tolland Senior Center.
In addition to his wife of 64 years, Lois; he will be fondly missed by his daughters, Carol Sewall of Vernon and her sons, Sumner "Buck" and Avery, Paula Mitterholzer and her husband, Leo, of Manchester and their daughters, Dawn, Heather, and Melissa, and Linda Wagner and her husband, Karl, of New Britain and their daughter, Daisy; son-in-law Joseph Beaudry, and his son and daughter, Joseph III and AprilLin. He also leaves 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Earl West of Florida; several nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends, and his special companion, Coco. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Richard John West; daughter, Jo-Ann Beaudry; brother, Arthur West; sister, June Kent; and son-in-law, Sumner Sewall, who was more like a son.
A memorial service for Richard will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, from the United Congregational Church of Tolland, 45 Tolland Green, Tolland. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
