Robert "Champ" Berger, 83, of Vernon, widower of Helen Grinaski Berger, passed away Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at home.

He was born Oct. 8, 1930, in Rockville the son of the late Frederick S. and Mary Regan Berger. Prior to his retirement, he worked as an inspector for Hamilton Standard. He was a communicant of St. Bernard Church, Rockville. He was known to many as "Berg" within American Legion baseball, where he dedicated over 55 years of service in the baseball program. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 14 of Rockville and the Rockville Elks. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Robert was an avid Red Sox fan and New York Giants fan.

He is survived by his two loving daughters and their husbands, Kim and Dennis Sowers of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Nancy and Jim Waddock of Tolland; the joy of his life, his grandchildren Michael John, Ryan, Morgan, Josh, Aden; his brother Donald Berger and sister Marylin Green, both of Vernon. And Uncle B. will be missed by his many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may join the family at the Burke Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect St., Rockville, on Thursday, Feb. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Feb. 21, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Bernard Church, Rockville. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Rockville American Legion Post 14 Baseball c/o the American Legion Post 14, 114 West St., Rockville, CT 06066.
