William F. Flaherty Jr., 69, beloved husband of Colleen (Mooney) Flaherty of Vernon, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Rockville General Hospital, Vernon.

Born in Boston on Feb. 7, 1943, son of the late William F. Flaherty Sr. and Doris (Ward) Flaherty, he had lived in South Windsor for many years before moving to Vernon 10 years ago. Bill worked for First National Supermarkets for 20 years, and moved to Connecticut in 1980 after the Massachusetts stores closed. He worked as a produce manager for an additional 22 years in Connecticut before retiring. He was an avid Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins fan and loved to listen to Elvis!
In addition to his wife, Colleen, he leaves seven children, William and wife, Elaine, John and wife, Tammy, Suzanne, Jona Huard Flaherty, Kellie Mejia and husband, Baldemar, Michael and wife, Cara, and Ryan and wife, Fallynn. He also raised and leaves behind three of his grandchildren, Jessica, Willie, and Breana Knighton. He has seven additional grandchildren, Amanda, Dustin, Elijah, Gaby, Jesse, Keyleigh, and Colton; and a great-grandson, Travis. Bill also leaves two brothers, Edward Flaherty and wife, Judy, and Robert Flaherty and wife, Carol, and several nieces, nephews, and relatives.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor. Burial will follow at Wapping Cemetery, South Windsor.
His family will receive friends Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
