Joseph C. Scalia, 81, of Enfield, entered into eternal life on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center, Springfield. He was the beloved husband of the late Juanita M. (Lech) Scalia and son of the late Carmelo and Lillian (Agilita) Scalia.

Joseph was born on Sept. 30, 1932, in Enfield, and was a lifelong resident of Enfield. He served his country honorably with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Prior to retiring in September 1987, he was employed by Eastern Airlines for 25 years. Joe was a member of St. Adalbert Church and the John Maciolek Post 154 American Legion, Enfield. He was a former coach with the Thompsonville Little League for 30 years, an avid bowler, UConn Huskies women's basketball fan, enjoyed cooking, and had a great sense of humor.

Joseph is survived by his three sons, Joseph C. Scalia Jr. and wife, Elaine, of West Springfield, Mass., James M. Scalia and wife, Bonnie, of Enfield, and John R. Scalia and wife, Debbie, of Great Barrington, Mass.; his nine cherished and adored grandchildren; and 25 beloved great-grandchildren; his loving companion, Carmela "Mel" Houlihan; a brother, Charles J. Scalia and wife, Barbara, of Springfield, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was also predeceased by a sister, Josephine Chrusciel.

Relatives and friends may gather with his family during calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels, 43 Shaker Road, Enfield.

The funeral procession will form at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 13, from the funeral home to St. Adalbert Church, 90 Alden Ave., Enfield, for a noon Mass of Christian burial. Interment will follow with military honors in St. Adalbert Cemetery in Enfield.
