Margaret (Welles) Burgess, 101, of Vernon, formerly of South Windsor, wife of the late Thomas M. Burgess, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 14, 2014, at Fox Hill Center in Vernon.

Peg was born on July 22, 1912, in South Windsor, daughter of the late Franklin Griswold and Mary (Smith) Welles. She attended local schools and resided in South Windsor for most of her life until moving to Vernon in 1993. Peg worked at the Phoenix Mutual Insurance Co. in Hartford. She was an active member of Talcottville Congregational Church, where she was married to Thomas Burgess. With her husband, she was a longtime member of Wapping Community Church and an active member of the Wapping Community Church Women, director of the Rhythmic Choir, and a youth leader. Peg was formerly active in South Windsor town politics. In addition to volunteering with FISH and Rockville Hospital Compassionate Friends, Peg was devoted throughout her life to her husband, children, grandchildren, and a large extended family.
She is survived by her daughter, Miriam "Mimi" McGill and her husband, David, of Barkhamsted; her son, Lawrence W. Burgess of South Windsor; her sister, Lucy Southergill of Winsted; her four loving grandchildren, Matthew Bouley of Vernon, Patrick Burgess and his wife, Beth, of South Windsor, Lawrence M. Burgess of Vernon, and Margaret "Meg" Carstens and her husband, Brian, of Wilton; three great-grandchildren, Katherine and Bennett Carstens and Thomas E. Burgess; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents Peg was predeceased by a granddaughter, Rebecca Ann McGill.
A memorial service will be celebrated on Sunday, March 23, 2014, at 3 p.m. at the Talcottville Congregational Church, 10 Elm Hill Road, Talcottville with a reception to follow. Burial will be private in Wapping Cemetery, South Windsor.
