Marian (Cotter) Cummings, 88, of South Windsor, beloved mother of James J. Cummings, died peacefully on Sunday, April 6, 2014, at her home.

She was born on June 5, 1925, in Manchester, daughter of the late William and Noreen Cotter. Marian grew up in Manchester and graduated from Manchester High School. She obtained her master's degree from Central Connecticut State University. Marian was a school teacher at Robertson Elementary School for over 30 years. She was a member of the Connecticut Education Association. In her retirement she enjoyed traveling and had the opportunity to travel to Alaska twice. She was also active with the retired teachers groups and enjoyed gardening, swimming, and the beach. A kind, caring and devoted mother, aunt, cousin, and friend she will be greatly missed by all, especially her faithful companion, her dog Rascal.
Along with her son, James of Suffield, she leaves her cousin, Cliff Cotter of Waterbury; her nephew and godson, Cliff Cotter Jr. of New Jersey; her nieces, Pat Allshouse of Maryland, Terry Fitzpatrick of Waterbury, and Anne Goggins of Branford. She was predeceased by her brothers, Bill and Ed Cotter.
Her family will receive friends on Friday, April 11, 2014, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor.
A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at 10 a.m., at St. James Roman Catholic Church, 896 Main St., Manchester. Burial will be private at the request of her family.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Friends of Homeless Animals, FOHA Inc., 8052 Bonito Drive, Marathon, FL 33050.
