Joseph E. Burns, 97, of South Windsor passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 18, 2014, in South Windsor. He was the loving husband of the late Francis S. Burns.

Joseph was born in Bridgeport on April 1, 1917, the son of the late James and Leah (Spash) Burns. He worked as a foreman at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for over 30 years before his retirement in 1976. Joseph pitched softball for various teams in East Hartford and at P&WA. Joseph was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in South Windsor, where he served as an usher for almost 50 years. He loved to play golf and enjoyed cards.

He leaves behind his two sons, Joseph E. Burns Jr. and Robert A. Burns and his wife, Joyce; grandchildren, Joseph III and his wife, Marie, Barbara and Yvette Devoid, Robert Jr. and his wife, Rinda, and Michael and his wife, Althea; six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind two sisters, Virginia "Gladys" Casalla of Glendale, Arizona, and Kathryn Mayville of Enfield; and several nieces and nephews.

His family will receive friends on Saturday, May 24, 2014, from 9 to 10 a.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor, followed by a service at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Wapping Cemetery, South Windsor.
