William Russell Niemann Sr., 86, of Ellington, beloved husband to Leatrice (Bastarache) Niemann for 67 years, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014, at Vernon Manor.

He was born Jan. 11, 1928, in Rockville to the late William J. and Isabel (Boucher) Niemann. William retired from a lifetime of farming in 1981. He was the maintenance man for 24 years at Snipsic Village in Ellington Center. He was a Mr. Fix-It, loved fishing, New England Patriots, Hartford Whalers, Boston Bruins, UConn women, and NASCAR. He was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, William R. Niemann Jr., Gloria Moeller, and her husband, Robert, John Niemann Sr., Linda Hanifin, Beverly Niemann, and Winifred Hart, and her husband, Ernest; his grandchildren, Bill, and his wife, Candie, Paul, and his wife, Erica, John, and his wife, Keri, Eric, and his wife, Jaime, Robert, and his wife, Michelle, Sharlene, Megan, and her husband, John, Kaylee, Andrew, and Danielle; his great-grandchildren, Brody, Branson, Brock, Brynn, Noah, Liana, Lucia, Robert, Ryan, and Mason; his brothers-in-law, Laurie Bastarache, and his wife, Elaine, Roger Bastarache; sisters-in-law, Irma and Benny Krasinski, Jean and Dick Hutton, Frances Fortini, Russell Niemann, Clifford and Eileen Niemann, Nancy and Milford Charette, and Eleanor Niemann; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Shirley and Edward Wandzy, Phyllis and Matthew Kadelski, Kenneth Niemann and Mary Niemann, and Norman Fortini.

The family would like to thank Dr. Milite, Dr. Bacay, Dr. Chaefeleous, and the staff at Vernon Manor.

Memorial donations may be made in William's name to Vernon Dialysis, 460 Hartford Turnpike, Suite C, Vernon, CT 06066.

Relatives and friends may join the family at Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect St., Rockville, on Thursday, June 5, 2014, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
