Robert E. Hayes, 77, of Tolland passed away Friday, May 30, 2014, after a long battle with Alzheimer's, at home with his family.

He was the son of the late Eunice and Harold Hayes. He was born in Vassalboro, Maine, in 1936 and lived in Tolland for 36 years. He was a graduate of Farmington High School and served in the U.S. Air Force for eight years. He was stationed in Vietnam during the Vietnam War, and met his wife while stationed in Germany at the age of 26. He later honed his talent with machinery by becoming a machinist, building airplanes for Pratt & Whitney for more than 35 years. During his youth, his passion for creation manifested itself in woodworking, to which he devoted much of his free time. As he got older, his love of solitary hobbies was instead replaced by a love for spending time with his grandchildren and recounting stories of his adventurous childhood.

He was predeceased by his parents and by his sisters, Edith Walters and Betty Ayer of Maine. He leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Wilhelmina H. Hayes; his son, Robert E. Hayes of Tolland, and his wife, Lindsay; his daughters, Maria J. Cardella of Tolland, and her husband, Neil, and Bonnie L. Yetz of Newington, and her husband, Mike; his grandchildren, Joshua A Cardella, Jeremy Robert Cardella, Tara L. Hayes, Eric D. Hayes, Ethan W. Hayes, and Amanda A. Hayes all of Tolland; his sister, Marlene Webber of Maine, and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 5, 2014, at the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Merrow Road, Tolland.
