John A. Backus, 78, of West Stafford, died on Tuesday, June 18, 2014, at home, surrounded by his family; he leaves the love of his life of 40 years, Michele (Paul) Backus.

He was born on July 20, 1935, in South Windsor, son of the late Adam and Elizabeth (Zorskis) Backus. John was a graduate of Cheney Technical High School in Manchester. He worked as an electrician throughout his career for Spencer Turbine, Whitney Chain and Cello Products. John lived in South Windsor for many years, also resided in Chatham, Massachusetts, for 12 years and was a life member of the South Windsor Volunteer Fire Department and a past member and vice president of the South Windsor Jaycees. John was a hardworking man who enjoyed fixing and upgrading things around his home. John enjoyed boating, sports and had played in softball leagues throughout the years. A kind, caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, he will be greatly missed by all.

Along with his wife of over 40 years, Michele, he leaves his children, John Backus of Somers, and Cindy Kabel and her husband, John, of Stafford Springs; his stepdaughters, Lori Trahan and her husband, Joe, of South Windsor, and Susan Joslin of Ellington; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Stanley Backus; and sisters, Margaret Cafro, Alice Larimore, and her faithful companion, Luke Larimore, and Anne Fuller.

His family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m., with a Memorial Service to follow at 7 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor.
