Joyce Mackie, 81, of Manchester, beloved wife of Edward C. Mackie, passed away late Thursday, July 3, 2014.

Joyce was born on Christmas Day in 1932, daughter of the late W. Ladds Smith and Ethel (Eastman) Smith. She attended school in York, Maine, as well as Fisher Junior College. She was employed for many years in Glastonbury by the late George Sherwood, attorney at law, and later with his son, attorney David Sherwood. In her later years, she worked part-time at the Manchester Big Y, serving customers in the self checkout lane.
During her lifetime, she was also active in the Order of the Eastern Star, former Bigelow Chapter 33 in East Hartford, and at Wapping Community Church in South Windsor. She was an avid reader and borrowed many books from the Manchester Memorial Library. Recently, she enjoyed spending time with her husband and friends at Senior Care of East Hartford.
Besides her loving husband of 52 years, she will be sorely missed by her daughter, Elizabeth Vanover and her husband, Darryl Vanover, of Ashford; her son William Ladds Mackie of Manchester; five grandchildren, Lindsay Vanover Polhemus and her husband, Zachary, of Coventry, Ryan Vanover and Justin Vanover of Ashford, William Mackie Jr. of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and Brandon Mackie of Manchester. She is further survived by her sister Marilyn Bowers and her husband, Carl, of Maine, John Smith and his wife, Juanita, of Arizona; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Theodore Smith of Virginia and Edward Smith of Florida.
Joyce's family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at Visiting Nurse & Health Services of Connecticut, Companions and Homemakers, and Senior Care of East Hartford for the special care given to Joyce.

A private burial will take place at First Parish Cemetery in York, Maine.
