Joseph "Joe" Garstka, 96, of Brewster, Massachusetts, formerly of the Hazardville section of Enfield, and the widower of Valentina "Val" (Luczai) Garstka, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, in Brewster.

Born Nov. 23, 1917, in Chicopee, Massachusetts, Joe was the son of Frank and Julia Garstka. He was a resident of Hazardville from 1937 until 2005, when he moved to Cape Cod. Joe was employed by Pratt & Whitney for 35 years and was a member of St. Bernard Church.
He is survived by his son, Paul, and his wife, Jonnie of Plymouth, Massachusetts; three grandchildren, James Garstka, Gretchen Laguna, and Stephanie Bilotti; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Polidori of East Greenwich, Rhode Island. He was predeceased by his son. Jim Garstka; and his three sisters, Jenny Jazwienski, Veronica Ryder, and Frances Lamoreau.
Joe, or "Papa" as his children called him, was a quiet, intelligent, gentle man. He loved his family, his cars, and the Red Sox. When asked if he would like people to give to a charity in his name, he answered, "Hell no! Have them take their families out to dinner and raise a glass for me. Scotch if they got it!"
Joe's family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield, followed by Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard Church, 426 Hazard Ave., Enfield. The burial will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery.
