Paul L. Maynard, 83, of Rocky Hill, passed away Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. He was the beloved husband of Eleanor (Wilson) Maynard.

Born in Greenfield, Mass., he was the son of Glen and Pearl (Rose) Maynard. Paul graduated from East Hartford High School and attended the University of Connecticut for one year. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He graduated from Boston University with a degree in music education and taught music in East Hartford schools for four years. In 1956, he opened Nationwide Insurance Agency with his partner, Michael Eremita. He served four years on the East Hartford Board of Education, two years on the Town Council, and two years as council clerk. In 1963, he ran for mayor in East Hartford. He served, for several years, on the Family Services Society board of directors and helped start the Meals on Wheels program in East Hartford and Glastonbury. He served on the East Hartford YMCA board of directors for many years. Paul was a 55-year member of the Exchange Club of East Hartford, including a term as president and a recipient of the Golden Deeds Award. He was also past president of the East Hartford Chamber of Commerce. He moved to Rocky Hill in 1976, where he served several years as a member of the Rocky Hill Republican Town Committee, including two years as president. He served as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals for 12 years. Paul was a lifelong musician, including time in an Army band in India and 40 years with the Landerman Agency. After his retirement, he worked as a Walmart greeter in Rocky Hill. He was also a member of the Rocky Hill Senior Serenaders, the Rocky Hill Congregational Church, and the American Legion.

Besides his wife, Eleanor, Paul leaves behind a son, Rick Maynard, and his wife, Terri; two daughters, Pamela Maynard, and her partner, Priscilla Maysonet, Kimberly Woitalewicz, and her husband, Tom; a stepson, Robert Barkman, and his wife, Joanne; four grandchildren, Ashley, Tyler, Maxwell, and Jared Maynard; and a daughter-in-law, Gail LeDage. He was predeceased by two sons, Gary and Thomas Maynard, and a daughter, Susan Maynard.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, Dec. 11, 12:30 p.m., at the Rose Hill Memorial Park in Rocky Hill. After the burial, a memorial service will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Rocky Hill Congregational Church, 805 Old Main St., Rocky Hill.

Calling hours are Thursday, Dec. 10, 4 to 7 p.m. at the Rose Hill Funeral Home, 580 Elm St., Rocky Hill.
