Waldo E. "Bud" Bushnell Jr., 93, beloved husband of Helen R. (Robertson) Bushnell for sixty-six years, entered into eternal rest with his family by his side on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at The Suffield House, where he received outstanding care for the past twenty months.
The son of the late Waldo E. Sr. and Minnie (Howard) Bushnell, Bud was born and raised in Winsted, and lived there most of his life. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a mechanical engineer degree. During World War II, he was employed as an engineer at Wright Aeronautical in Peterson, N.J. With his father, he owned and operated W. E. Bushnell & Son, a business specializing in tire sales, automobile repair, and sales and service of major home appliances. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in the Pine Meadow section of New Hartford. In retirement, he was an active volunteer with several organizations, but especially with Kiwanis Clubs in Winsted, and in Lake Weir, Weirsdale, Fla. He was a Mason, and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge in Winsted. With his wife he was an avid traveler, visiting many places in western North America, Europe, and North Africa. He was a skier into his 70s, and loved to sail into his 80s. For many decades, he and his family camped in a variety of RVs, from Maine to Florida and Texas.
Bud is survived by a son, the Rev. Peter E. Bushnell and his wife, Kathryn, of Enfield; a daughter, Susan Bushnell Grim and her husband, Kevin, of Puebla, Mexico; six grandchildren, Michael D. Bushnell, Anna Bushnell Gray and her husband, Duane, Jeremy M. Grim and his wife, Lindsay, Ruth V. Bushnell, Jesse K. Grim and his wife, JoAnna, and Raymond C. E. Bushnell and his wife, Carla; and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Elinor C. Dotson.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
