John B. Furphey Sr., 96, of Ellington, beloved husband of the late Janet (Janton) Furphey, passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012.

He was born Nov. 12, 1916 in Rockville, the son of the late, John and Carrie (Donovan) Furphey. He was the first Recreation Commissioner of Ellington. He was a baseball and basketball coach. He was also an avid golfer and tennis player and bowler.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, John B. Furphey Jr. and Jennifer of New Jersey and Linda F. Morganson and Charles of New Hampshire; his grandchildren, Katherine Furphey; John M. Furphey; Chuck Morganson and his wife, May Lynn Tan; Melissa Buganski and her husband, Christopher; and Shannon Johanson and her husband, Eric; his great-grandchildren, Tai and Shea Morganson and Lexi and Mason Buganski; and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013 at the Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect St., Rockville, CT 06066.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at St. Bernard Church, 25 St. Bernard Terrace, Rockville. Burial will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery, Rockville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Bernard Church.
