Patricia J. (Sargeant) Whitman, 77, of Ellington, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013.

Born in Randolph Center, Vt., the daughter of the late Wesley and Esther (Clark) Sargeant, she grew up in Randolph Center and lived in Tolland and Rockville before moving to Ellington seven years ago. Prior to her retirement, Pat was a customer service representative for the J.C. Penney Co. for several years. Pat was a simple woman, strong-willed, and independent. She enjoyed a lifelong love of golf, vacations at the beach, and UConn basketball and football. Throughout her life, she enjoyed bowling, sewing, and crafting. Holiday celebrations with her family were important to her, and many remember her "best ever" spaghetti dinners.

She is survived by her children, Gary Whitman of Vernon and Pat Whitman of Austin, Texas; her grandchildren, Jared and Hannah; three sisters, Dorothy Burrows of Windsor Locks, Shirley Sargeant Grassette of Columbus, Ohio, and Roberta Rouviere of Chandler, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by six brothers, Sherwood, Herbert, John, Dwayne, Henry, and his wife, Sarah, and Homer, and his wife, Helen; and two sisters, Mary Bashaw, and her husband, Robert, and Mae Belle Goodrich, and her husband, Joseph.

Her family will receive friends for calling hours on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her memory may be made to the ASPCA, 424 E. 92nd St., New York, NY 10128-6804.
