Deacon James "Jim" J. Burgess, 90, of the Somersville section of Somers, widower of Alvina (Cormier) Burgess to whom he was married for 52 years, entered into eternal rest Sunday, June 9, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Jim was born May 5, 1923, in Somersville, son of the late Frank and Rose (Gauthier) Burgess. In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Alvina, he was predeceased by his siblings Irene, Ray, Helen, Grace, and Eddie. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Ric Burgess, and his wife, Roberta, of Clinton, Lisa Snyder, and her husband, Jeff, of St. Petersburg, Fla., Gary Burgess, and his wife, Meg, and James Burgess Jr., and his wife, Heather, all of Manchester; his eight cherished grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; his two sisters-in-law, Liz Leathe of Broad Brook and Toni Schlaefer of Tucson, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews; and his dear friend and companion, Vi Landry of Enfield.
He proudly served his country as a corporal in the United States Army during World War II. Jim was employed in sales in the aerospace industry from 1950 until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the musician's union through the 1960s and played drums with many local combos. He was a lifelong resident of the Somers community and a dedicated parishioner of All Saints Church, where he touched many lives through his ministry, which included CCD instruction, marriage preparation, membership in the Holy Name Society, and the Knights of Columbus. Jim was ordained deacon in 1984. He also served as municipal agent for the Town of Somers.
Family and friends may gather on Saturday, June 15, at 9:30 a.m. at Somers Funeral Home, 354 Main St., for a procession to All Saints Church, 25 School St., where a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Jim's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Somers Center Cemetery.
His family will receive relatives and friends at Somers Funeral Home on Friday, June 14, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m.
