PRESTON 'JIM' SARLES JR., 68 STOCKTON - Preston (Jim) Sarles Jr., 68, of Stockton, IL, passed away from a heart attack Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at his home. He was born December 8, 1945; the son of the late Preston and Ethel (Krell) Sarles. Jim graduated from Freeport High School in 1963, and attended Lincoln Barber College in East Moline, IL. He had served in the United States Navy from 1965 - 1968, and was stationed in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967. On June 25, 1972, he married Sharon Downs in Lanark, IL. In 1973, he moved to Stockton where he owned Jim's Barber Shop and retired after 46 years of barbering on December 24, 2010. Jim was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Stockton where he had served as Chairman of the Trustees, and was a former member of Embury Methodist Church of Freeport. He was also a member of the Stockton VFW where he was a former Commander and had held other offices. Jim was a member of the Stockton Lions Club, and had served as President for many years as well as Zone Chairman. His memberships also included the Stockton Chamber of Commerce, the Stockton Golf Course Board, and the Stockton Fireworks Committee. Jim helped cook chicken at the Stockton 4th of July Celebration for over 30 years. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed golfing, fishing, boating, camping, hunting, and gardening. Jim also enjoyed traveling and reading, especially about history. He was a diehard Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. He was also an avid supporter of the Stockton Blackhawks and attended many of their sporting events. Jim had scouted football teams for Coach John O'Boyle and Coach Brad Fox for over 20 years. He was inducted into the NW Sports Hall of Fame in 2005, and was awarded business person of the year in Stockton in 2010. He is survived by his wife, Shari and their foreign exchange student, Veronique Delsol of France, who they considered their daughter. He is also survived by his sisters, Brenda (Don) Shank of Cedarville, IL and Vicki Standley of German Valley, IL; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; nephews, Bryan Munz and Brad Munz; and brother-in-law, Bruce Standley. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014, at the Hermann Funeral Home in Stockton. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2014, at Calvary United Methodist Church in Stockton. Interment will take place at Ladies Union Cemetery in Stockton at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Calvary United Methodist Church, the Stockton Veteran's Memorial, and for Sight & Sound of the Rockford Lions Club.
