Richard Maples

RICHARD (DICK) MAPLES, 75 LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Richard (Dick) Maples, age 75, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, passed away on Friday, September 6, 2013. Dick was born to Ovid and Eva Jean Maples, on November 28, 1937, in Joliet, IL. He married Sharon Merrill on July 6, 1957. Dick was raised in Freeport, IL. He was a very active member of the Boy Scouts. He achieved many honors from Eagle Scout to Scout Master. He traveled to two National Jamborees and numerous year round camping trips. Upon his return, he was expected to share these experiences with others in the community. The scouting tradition was passed down to the next two generations. Dick graduated from NIU with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he worked at Micro Switch, in Freeport, transferring to Las Cruces, NM in 1983, until his retirement in 1993. Dick was a community volunteer. He and his wife worked on various Jaycee community projects, such as Care Packages for Soldiers and Keep Freeport Beautiful. In the 1960's, he was elected "Man of the Year," and Chairman for the Miss Freeport Pageant. Through the years, he also served as a Deacon in the First Presbyterian Church, and as a Little League Coach. Dick's greatest hobby was spending time at the Mississippi River, in the Sabula Harbor area. He and his family enjoyed boating, fishing, swimming, skiing, and socializing. His other hobbies included working on cars, wood working, lawn and garden care, home building and remodeling. Dick is predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Maples, of Las Cruces; his children, son, Tom (Robin) Maples of Las Cruces, son, Rick (Julie) Maples of Danville, VA, and daughter, Beth (Ben) Edwards of Las Cruces. His grandchildren are Matt Maples of Dayton, OH; Jake Maples of Danville, VA; Jeff (Erika) Maples of Jacksonville, FL; Katie (Michael) Sanchez of Las Cruces; Michelle Maples of Las Cruces; and his great-grandchildren, Kole Maples and Nathan Maples. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America. A visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, September 20, at the La Paz-Graham Funeral Home.
