Helen Solomon Obituary

Helen W. Solomon
December 22, 1917 - December 24, 2014
Warner Robins, GA.- WARNER ROBINS, GA — Helen "Sweetie" Solomon, 97, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014, at her home under the loving care of her twin daughters.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Dec. 30 at Heritage Memorial Funeral Home.
Helen was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Jacob and Mary Weigandt. After receiving her college education, she married Capt. Frank Shipman, who was later killed in WWII. In 1946, she married Capt. Joseph L. Solomon.
In 1953, when she and her three children contracted polio, it sparked in her a decades long fight to combat and eradicate the disease. As part of this, in 1958 her family was named the March of Dimes National Poster Family. She and her children traveled extensively throughout the nation on behalf of the March of Dimes campaign, including a stop on the Ed Sullivan show and a fashion show with Marilyn Monroe.
In the 1950s, she served as Georgia State Advisor on Women's Activities and Secretary of the Houston County Chapter of the March of Dimes, where she spoke before various organizations. She was an official of the Robins Air Force Base Officers' Wives Club.
While living at Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico, she was named Mother of the Year in 1963. During the early 1970s, she served as secretary to Congressman Jack Brinkley at Warner Robins City Hall.
She will be sorely missed for her kindness, generosity, sense of humor and selfless love for her family.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include her son, Joseph A. Solomon, of Marine-on-St. Croix, Minnesota; and identical twin daughters Linda Ferrell of Hastings, Minnesota, and Sandra Martinez, of Warner Robins. She is also survived by grandchildren Renee Corwine, Aaron Fountain, Alan Fountain, Travis Sell, Scott Sell, Chris Ferrell and Amber Pryzbyla; nephew Stephen Weigandt; and several great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Heart of Georgia Hospice, Houston County ASPCA, Wounded Warrior Foundation or the March of Dimes.

What a blessing it was to have known Helen, Joe, Linda and Sandy. Sweetie always had a big smile and hug for me whenever I would get to see her. All of you will hold a very special place in my heart, forever and always.

I did not know this gracious woman, but as a polio survivor and author, think her story is inspiring!

Sandra, I'm sorry for your loss. I remember how sweet your mom was from when we were in Warm Springs together. You and your family will be in our prayers.

A more loving person never entered our lives. Without Sweetie, the world will be a quieter place and much less joyful. She gave so much and asked for so little. My love to Sandy and Linda.

Your house was always open and welcoming to me. I still have some of your ceramics we made.
