Gerald Ter Hark Obituary
GERALD 'GERRY' G. TER HARK, 77 FREEPORT - Gerald "Gerry" G. Ter Hark, 77, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at his home in Freeport. He was born in Ridott on October 24, 1936, to Henry and Helena (Kuhlemeyer) Ter Hark, and graduated from Freeport High School in 1954. He married Gail Plowman on May 18, 1957. Gerry was a self-taught master mechanic and owned Gerry's Motor Clinic in Freeport for more than 30 years. Gerry was a member and past president of the Stephenson County Antique Engine Club for many years, and was a charter member of the Northwest Illinois Two Cylinder Club. He enjoyed repairing and restoring antique John Deere tractors, often rebuilding them from a box of parts to show-room perfection. He was honored when one of his restorations was chosen for display at the John Deere Historical Museum in Moline, IL. Gerry loved to chat and tell jokes and stories over a cup of coffee. Gerry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gail of Freeport; daughters, Tina (Bob) Brophil of St. Augustine, FL and Lizetta (Patrick) George of Lena; son, Neal (Amy) Ter Hark of Pecatonica; grandchildren, Brandon and Amanda George; step grandchildren, Russell, Nicole, and Kyle Ter Hark; and step-great-grandchildren, Elexus and Evan Jon Ter Hark. He was predeceased by his parents, four siblings, and son, Jon. Visitation will be held at from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 24, Walker Mortuary, with a Memorial Service on at 10 a.m. Friday, April 25, also at Walker Mortuary, officiated by Rev. John Hollis. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery in the Ter Hark family plots. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a memorial fund established in Gerry's name.
