BERNADINE ESSIE CARPENTER HITE, 86 WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa - Mrs. Bernadine Essie (Carpenter) Hite, 86, of West Burlington, IA, died Saturday, June 15, 2013, at the New London Nursing and Rehab Center. Mrs. Hite was born September 5, 1926, in Stockton, Illinois, the daughter of Clyde and Manilla Inman Carpenter. She married George R. Hite on February 26, 1945, in Kansas City, Kansas. He died July 8, 2001. She worked in production at Sylvania, retiring after 15 years. She was a 1945 graduate of Stockton High School. She attended the New London Christian Church, was a member of the Burlington VFW Post 10102 Auxiliary, and loved doing crafts, playing bingo, musicals and movies. She was also an excellent cook. After her husband died, she enjoyed traveling to Buckeye AZ to spend the winter and had many friends there at the RV park. She was very independent and drove alone back and forth between home and Arizona. Mrs. Hite is survived by one son, Jerry (Sherry) Hite of Danville; one granddaughter; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lyman (Anna) Carpenter of Manteca, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one grandson, Travis Hite; and two sisters, Gertrude Tegl and Jeanette Whites. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 19, at Elliott Chapel, New London. Pastor Rod Cooper officiated. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Burlington. A memorial has been established to the New London Christian Church.
