Alfred "Al" Beck

RACINE - Alfred 'Al' Beck, 92, passed away at Ridgewood Care Center on Saturday, March 30, 2013. Al was born in Withee, WI on August 12, 1920, the son of the late Jens and Ingeborg (nee: Moller) Beck. During WWII, Al served in the U.S. Army Air Corps stationed in England. Later while teaching high school in New Glarus, WI, Al met and fell in love with June Hanson. They were married on July 25, 1947 in Niellsville, WI and soon moved to Racine, WI where Al worked for Western Publishing for 37 years until his retirement. He loved taking photographs -- especially on summer trips throughout the U.S. -- and sharing them in slide shows for senior citizens. He also loved gardening, raising sweet corn, tomatoes, and all varieties of flowers. Al was a sportsman, enjoying bowling, fishing, and especially baseball. He was a longtime member of Emmaus Lutheran Church. Al is survived by: his wife of 65 years, June; three children, Angela (Herbert) Henning, Steven (Hiroko) Beck, LuAnn (Douglas) Andreasen; seven grandchildren, Michael (Allison) Henning, Kenneth (Elvia) Beck, Brian (Dana) Henning, Robert (Michelle) Andreasen, Christine (Sam) Kilgas, Christopher (Julia) Beck, and Mitchell Beck; and eight great grandchildren, Jenna, Sydney, Kaitlyn, Cassandra, Ava, Evan, Owen, and Adelyn, in addition to nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Al was preceded in death by seven brothers -- Ted, Jim, Pete, Helner, Fred, Chris, and Hans -- and two sisters, Ann and Helene. Funeral services for Al will be held at Emmaus Lutheran Church, 1925 Summit Ave. on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Mary Janz officiating. Al will be laid to rest at West Lawn Memorial Park with full military honors. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. Those wishing to remember Al in a special way may direct memorials to Emmaus Lutheran Church.
