BURLINGTON - Karl D. Kirkeby, 77, formerly of Racine, passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at his residence with his family by his side. Karl was born in Yamhill County Oregon, on January 19, 1935 the son of the late, Kolbjorn and Clara (nee: Suhr) Kirkeby. He was a graduate of Sparta High School "Class of 1952". Karl proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1953 until 1955. He was united in marriage to Carol Kateley in LaCrosse on February 11, 1956. Karl was employed at Racine Steel Castings retiring in 1992 after 37 years of service. He was a member of Racine Moose Club, Nordlyset #183, past president of Sons of Norway, Wergeland Society, Cub Scout Leader. Karl enjoyed playing baseball and coaching with Sacred Heart Catholic School. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and worked diligently for The Girl Scouts Cookie Drive and bowled for the Racine Steel Casting Bowling League. Most of all Karl found his greatest enjoyment in attending his children's sports activities, going to Packer games, watching games with his sons and son-in-law Mark and spending time with his grandchildren, great grandchildren, family and friends. Karl is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol, children, Carla (Mark) Rannow, of Burlington, Kenneth (Debra) Kirkeby of Fort Atkinson, Kolby (Judy) Kirkeby of Racine and son-in-law, Russ (Jenny) Borgen of Racine. He is also survived by grandchildren, Lee (Brenda) Borgen, Danelle (Jerry) Boehme, Kenneth David Kirkeby Jr., Owen Kirkeby, Benjamin (April) Price, Kyle Kirkeby, Eric (Melissa) Kirkeby, great grandchildren, Tannon, Malachi, Erin, Layla, Lacey and, Kaelee, mother-in-law, Martha Hermanson of LaCrosse along with many other relatives and dear friends in Racine, Burlington and Norway. Karl was preceded in death by one daughter, Cheryl Borgen, parents and his father-in-law, George Kateley Funeral service will be held at Sturino Funeral Home on Saturday April 14, 2012, at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until service time. Karl will be laid to rest at Holy Family Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Karl in a special way may direct memorials to the family for the benefit of several charities.
