BURLINGTON - John R. Van Haren, 86, of Burlington, late of West Bend, passed away Monday, March 3, 2014 at Horizon Lawlis Family Hospice in Mequon. Born March 20, 1927, in Oconto Falls, he was the son of Ben and Mildred (nee Angus) Van Haren. He spent his early years in Oconto Falls and Gillette where he graduated from high school before going to UW LaCrosse where he received a degree in education. He proudly served in the Army during World War II. On June 4, 1949, in LaCrosse, he was united in marriage to Claire Marie Budde. Following marriage they made their home in Graceville, MN and Burlington before moving to West Bend 8 years ago. Claire preceded him in death on May 12, 2011. John was a Physical Education teacher and a Vice Principal with the Burlington School system. He was a previous member of St. Charles Church; loved to referee high school ball games; was a true sports enthusiast; enjoyed dancing, playing cards and going to Friday night fish fry’s. He was an active member of the Burlington American Legion Post for many years. He is survived by his children, Linda (Paul) Ernst of Green Bay, Jeff (Theresa) Van Haren of Torrance, CA, Maribeth Miller of Cedarburg, Laurie (Rick) Verga of Cedarburg and Susan (Robin) Roberts of Green Bay; grandchildren, Anne Marie Lochner, Rusty (Nicole) Carruth, John Taylor, Emily Waters, Bridget (Justin) Barisonek, Christopher (Megan) Reilly, Tony Verga, Chris Verga, Jessica Sommerfeldt, Erin Sommerfeldt, Katie Sommerfeldt, Grace Roberts, Lilly Roberts, Chris Roberts, Dan Roberts and Kara Roberts, and four great grandchildren. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Cathy Waters; son, Johnny Van Haren; and brother, Ralph (Marge) Van Haren. The family would like to thank Horizon Hospice in Mequon and Dr. Carol Wood for their care and compassion. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 10:00 AM at St. Charles Catholic Church, Burlington. Visitation will be at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home on Friday, March 7, 2014 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Burial will follow the service on Saturday at St. Charles Cemetery.
