. RACINE - Karl Kumpel Jr., 80, passed away on Monday, August 30, 2010, at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare - All Saints. He was born in Hillsboro, Ill. on June 26, 1930, the son of Karl Sr. and Myrtle Mary (nee: Mills) Kumpel. Karl was united in marriage to Margaret Allen on December 12, 1953, in Rice Lake. As a young child, he attended North Racine School and was a 1948 graduate of William Horlick High School. He received his degree as an X-ray Technician from Colombia Hospital in Milwaukee, where he continued to work as an Instructor from 1953 until 1954. Karl then was employed at St. Mary's Hospital in Wausau as a Director from 1954 until 1956. Moving to Racine in 1956, he was employed at St. Luke's Hospital as the Chief Technician and Director of the X-ray School, retiring in 1987. Karl coached softball for the men and women's softball leagues for St. Luke's Hospital and was a Pitcher for the city leagues. He loved the outdoors, fishing in Canada, and hunting in Northern Wisconsin. Karl also enjoyed Chess, Pinochle, and Cribbage. He was an avid sports fan, who liked the St. Louis Cardinals, the Milwaukee Brewers, and especially the Chicago Cubs. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Margaret; children, James (Debra) Kumpel of Mount Vernon, Wash. and Karla Kumpel of Whitefish Bay; grandchildren, Kristine (David Sr.) Hornbek, Andrew (Cassie) Kumpel, and Elizabeth (Phillip) Linscheid; and eight great-grandchildren. He is further survived by other relatives and friends. Karl was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Janet VanBerg. Funeral services will be held at Sturino Funeral Home on Friday, September 3, 2010, at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. There will be a visitation at the funeral home on Friday before services from 11:30 a.m. until time of service. The Kumpel family extends its gratitude to all the doctors, nurses, CNA's, and all the other personnel for their excellent care of Karl during his stay at All Saints Hospital.
