MENLO PARK, CA - (Formerly of Racine) Mr. David J. Grant, 66, passed away January 4, 2013. David was born in Milwaukee on October 22, 1946. After graduating from St. Catherine's high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he proudly served his country from 1964-1967, when he was honorably discharged due to a service-related injury. In his youth, David was an avid Boy Scout, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a gifted swimmer and enjoyed teaching youth at the local YMCA pool. Despite his injuries, his indomitable spirit and capacity for love and self-determination continued throughout his life and were an inspiration to all who knew him. He was also known for his firm handshake. In 1990, David was moved to the VA nursing home in Menlo Park, CA to be near his sister Maribeth and nephews Garrett and Grant. David remained there until his death. He was preceded in death by his father Maurice Grant (deceased 1985). He is survived by his mother, Jean Grant, brother Keith Grant, and sister Maribeth Grant Thompson. David's family wishes to thank all the staff at the VA in Menlo Park and Palo Alto for their many years of care and love. Volunteering for a day at a VA facility near you would be a meaningful tribute to David's memory.
