Polley, William E. Age 88, of Northfield, MN, formerly of Brookfield, died December 29, 2010, at the Northfield Care Center. William "Bill" was born May 3, 1922, in Rochester, WI, to Earl and Ethel Polley. Bill graduated from the Racine County School of Agriculture and Domestic Economy in 1940. During WWII he served three years in the U.S. Army (8th Air Force) with the 942nd Engineer, Aviation, and Topographic Battalion in the European Theater in England, Belgium, and Germany. In 1946 he married Geraldine (nee Schmidt). He earned a B.S. from Whitewater State University in 1947 and a M.E. from Marquette University in 1952. Bill was a public school educator for 36 years. From 1947-1955 he taught physics and biology at Washington Park High School in Racine, WI. He served the Elmbrook School System, Brookfield, WI from 1955-1983, first as a physics teacher and science department chair at Brookfield Central High School, and later as Coordinator/ Supervisor of Science, Mathematics and Health, grades 7-12. Bill was recognized by the Wisconsin Society of Professional Engineers as an outstanding teacher of high school physics, and was a member of the advisory board of the Southeastern Wisconsin Science Fair. Also, he served as president of the Milwaukee Suburban Science Teachers Association. Bill was an accomplished accordion player and photographer. He was in charge of the Brookfield Central high School Photo Club. A radio controlled model airplane enthusiast, Bill was a member of the Flying Electrons Radio Controlled Model Airplane Club and the Rice County (MN) Radio Control Flyers. Bill is survived by daughter Jo Ann Polley (husband Mark Ulmer) of Northfield, MN. He was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine in 2005, his brother Robert, and his parents. Visitation Thursday, January 6, 2011, at the Funeral Home from 4:00 - 6:00 PM, and Friday morning from 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM with funeral services at 10:30 AM. Procession to Wisconsin Memorial Park for the graveside committal service to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Northfield Retirement Community, 900 Cannon Valley Drive, Northfield, MN 55057 or the charity of your choice.
