Hammel, John L. - Sturgeon Bay
Hammel, John L. John Lawrence Hammel, 90, of Sturgeon Bay, formerly of Waukesha, passed away early Friday morning, November 14, 2014, at Golden Living Center-Dorchester where he had resided following a short illness. He was born November 15, 1923, in Joliet, IL, the son of the late Frederick and Caroline (Mueller) Hammel. Following his graduation from Joliet High School, John served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1941-1946. He was a decorated war veteran who received the Purple Heart after suffering a traumatic injury while fighting in the famous Battle of the Bulge. That didn't seem to slow John down, and he never wanted anyone feeling sorry for him. He built his retirement home in Door County himself, even with two prosthetic legs, showing what determination can accomplish. John was very active in Waukesha County politics, serving on the city council and various boards for many years. He was a judicial court stenographer for Waukesha County until his retirement. On December 28, 1974, John married Jean Marie Sprotte. She recently preceded him in death on September 7, 2014. John was a member of the AMVETS, the Disabled American Veterans, the Military Order of the Purple Heart and editor of their national magazine. He was an intelligent, simple and humble man, coupled with a wonderful sense of humor. John enjoyed Sturgeon Bay with his wife, Jean, especially the times spent with their friends at the local pubs and restaurants. He was an active day trader of individual stock companies even until the day before he passed. Survivors include his two daughters, Sandra Hammel of Hubertus, Madeline (James) Vlassis of Dousman; two step-sons, James (Kathleen) Awe of Cedarburg, Larry (Debra) Awe of Wauwatosa; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three brothers; one sister; and two sons, John Jr. and Ronald. Private family services with military honors will be held at Wisconsin Memorial Park. Condolences and guestbook signing may be offered on John's tribute page at www.huehnsfuneralhome.com .
