Just days after graduation he went in to the Navy and served in the south Pacific during World War II
. After he left the service he went to the state teachers college (now UWM) to study for an art degree. He didn't finish his degree, but passed on his ability in art to his two granddaughters, one of whom will receive a Bachelors of Fine Art degree from University of Wisconsin
, Madison this Spring. Don met his future wife Marian Traxler at an Eagles Ball Room dance. As the family story goes - he knew instantly she was the one for him, showing up daily waiting for her to get out of work at The Telephone Company, following her out west where she had transferred to be near her siblings. After convincing her to come back to Milwaukee, they were married five months later. Don served an apprenticeship in sheet metal becoming a journeyman. He worked for various outside shops and for the majority of his career worked for AC/Delco in Oak Creek.
